Bob Moran introduced this morning’s speakers Catherine Dehart and Patrick Hockenberry of the Northampton Community College Foundation.  Catherine began by stating that the Foundation has a $60,000,000 endowment.  There are 200 scholarship funds, one of the funds is the Palmer Kiwanis Scholarship Fund.  Last year the Foundation gave out scholarships to 700 students with a total value of approximately $780,000.  She also indicated the College’s tuition and fees as full-time students (12-18 credit hours) in county is $4,530/year and outside county $9,780.  For part-time students (less than 12 credit hour) in county $151/credit hour and out of county $326/hour.  The criteria for the Palmer Kiwanis scholarship are to provide scholarship assistance to full and part-time students with financial need; the student must be 25 years old or younger; and, they will go to graduates of Easton Area HS, Wilson HS, Norte Dame, and CIT.

Patrick followed by indicating that the Palmer Kiwanis Club Fund awarded $1,750 for the 2019-2020 academic year.  The current endowment market value is $74,680.  Since the beginning of the fund, they have awarded nine scholarship for a total value of $13,393.  To meet the Club’s criteria of a student in financial need the NCC Foundation uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid process.  The process of choosing a student for the Club’s scholarship includes: the student fills out the application on-line; the eligible students who meet the Club’s criteria are matched; and, the eligible student applications are reviewed and the unmet need is determined.

Catherine summarized how the Foundation determines how much each year’s scholarship payout will be.  The Foundations Financial Committee meets to review the performance of the endowment each year and based on that determines what the percentage will be.  That percentage times the amount in each of the 200 scholarship funds determines the cash amount given from each fund.  The Palmer Kiwanis scholarship for the 2019-2020 year was $1,750.
